Berendina Stichting a Dutch family Trust initiated by late Ms. Berendina Borst worked in Sri Lanka from 1992 to 2007. Berendina Development Services (Gte) Ltd (BDS) commenced operations in 2005 May and Berendina Microfinance Institute (Gte) (BMI) Ltd commenced operations in 2007 April.  Both commenced operations as a successor to the work of Berendina Stichting which is the core funder of the two NGO’s .However  it is now managed entirely by a Sri Lankan Board of Directors and Sri Lankan staff. Berendina   has also been assisted financially by JICA, USAID, Big Lottery Fund of UK , GTZ Promise, NDTF, Eitmos, Cordaid and Stromme Foundation.
